WhatsApp marketing for e-commerce: a practical playbook

WhatsApp2 min readJuly 24, 2026

WhatsApp marketing is more than sending promotions. Answering product questions, helping with unfinished purchases and supporting customers after a sale are parts of the same experience. A good e-commerce plan prepares permission, audience selection, timing and the team handling replies together. Success should be measured by completed customer tasks rather than messages sent.

Choose one goal

A product launch, repeat purchase and abandoned-cart follow-up need different messages. Define the behaviour you want before launching. Rather than combining a discount, survey and unrelated product promotion, give the message one main next step.

Prepare permission and audience selection

Having a phone number does not automatically authorise promotions. Record when permission was obtained, the wording used and its purpose. Segment by interests and purchase stage, and remove people who opt out. Assess WhatsApp’s rules alongside applicable local requirements.

Prepare what happens after the message

Be ready for product, stock, delivery and return questions when customers reply. Store connections help keep answers current. Hand unresolved requests to agents and plan for the extra support demand a campaign may create.

Set template, timing and stopping rules

Use approved templates where required. Recheck stock, pricing and purchase status immediately before sending. Stop the flow after purchase, opt-out or a complaint. Apply frequency rules so competing campaigns do not reach the same person repeatedly.

Measure sales and experience together

Track delivered messages, clicks, qualified replies and completed orders separately. Include discounts, messaging, platform and support costs. A control group can help avoid crediting the campaign for purchases that would have happened anyway.
